women and anal sex

It is really important that women use lubricant for anal sex to reduce the risk of bleeding, abrasions, fissures, incontinence, trauma and pain, which in rare circumstances can become permanent or require surgery. Women are at higher risk than men of developing these complications due to our different anatomy, effects of hormones, pregnancy and child birth.

It is important to reduce the risk of bacteria from the anus and rectum entering the vagina. If anal sex has taken place, it is important then to use a new condom for any vaginal sex that follows. If the vaginal sex and the anal sex are without condoms then the penis should be washed prior to the vaginal sex.

With anal sex, the risk of pregnancy is not zero. Pregnancy can occur if precum or semen is spilled onto the vulva or into the vagina.

Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) can be transmitted through both anal and vaginal sex. Condoms can reduce this risk.  Use water-based lube with condoms; oil-based lube will perish the latex.

Even though anal sex has become more common among heterosexual couples, many choose not to do it.  Remember, it’s your body and your choice.
It’s completely ok to say no or to stop at any point if you don’t want to continue.
